Engine Belts and Hoses Purpose:

There are many different belts and hoses in a vehicles engine. They all have different purposes, but the up-keep and maintenance is very important.

A timing belt, or cam belt, is the part of the engine that controls the timing of the engine valves, and in most cases, is used to drive other components of the engine like the water and oil pump.

The fan belt, or serpentine belt, is used to drive the accessories installed in the car’s engine such as the alternator, water pump, power steering pump and the air conditioner. Some engines only have a single serpentine belt and other cars may have two or more.

Mostly all the engine components have hoses which are necessary for proper operation, like the coolant hoses, vacuum hose and radiator hose.

Engine Belts and Hoses Common Problems:

All of the belts and hoses inside of a car engine have a limited life and any mechanic will suggest that you replace them after a certain amount of time or mileage. Engine belts will eventually stretch out and result in a loud, high pitched squeaking noise. Furthermore, they can also fail and break without warning if they are not changed when recommended. A broken belt can cause costly damage to your engine, as well as leave you stranded without a working car.

Engine hoses also have a limited life and therefore need to be checked regularly for cracks and breaks. Broken or cracked hoses will result in fluid leaks as well as poor performance from the engine components, which can lead to costly repair or replacement.
